How to Instragram Your Way To The Top

by Cara McGinnis • July 21, 2014
You know the saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Well, this is so true for Instagram. In fact, pictures are the only thing that get you LIKEs, Follows and Reposts. So you better have some great pictures and you better know how to filter them.

Filter, what?

Instagram

If you are new to Instagram, then filters will become your best friend. If you are an Instagram-expert, then you know as well as I do, you don’t need to hire an expensive professional photographer anymore. Just filter it! While we could talk filters all day, that is not really the most important aspect. Mashable wrote a great article that breaks down all the filters and tells you which one is best for what type of picture. We will leave that to them.

So, now you are probably asking, what do I need to know to stand out on Instagram? To cut through the clutter of everything else out there, here are the 5 most important things worth knowing and just some common sense to Instagram your way to the top or bottom (whatever direction you choose).

  1. Visualize the Vision: Instagram users are savvy and know a lack-luster photo when they see one. Post images that can be seen in a different angle, viewpoint or filter.

  2. Exclusivity Rules: post images that can only be seen on Instagram. Post photos of your employees at work to give viewers an inside look into your company. Viewers want to feel like they are part of something – give them an inside glimpse.

  3. Hashtag, Hashtag, don’t forget the Hashtag!: Hashtags allow people to find you and your content.

Think about your company and what keywords come to mind? What do you want people to find you for? Use those keywords and put the # sign in front of the word every time. Hashtags are especially useful as you seek to establish your brand as an industry leader and get more followers. Remember to use them on ALL of your posts. Gotta hashtag brain fart – Webstagram keeps a running list of what Hashtags are trending – use them to your advantage.

  4. Repost What Fits: imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If you see a photo that you like, show the other person that you like it by reposting it, using the Repost app or simply acknowledging where you got the photo by tagging them with the @ sign. More times than not, you will be rewarded.

  5. Search, Don’t Wait for Content: searching hashtags is the best way to find other people talking about what you are talking about. Find your audience, find competitors or even distributors just by focusing on keywords that fit your brand. Focusing in on the top 5 keywords will allow you to build a presence on a platform that currently has 27 million users. Be consistent with the content that you choose.
